Chapter Twelve

“Oliver, can we schedule a meeting soon?” I leaned against the doorframe of his office as though my heart wasn’t pounding furiously in my chest and my hands weren’t sweating profusely.

“Of course.” He pulled out his weekly planner and skimmed its contents. “I’m out most of next week, but how about next Friday at four thirty?”

It was better than I hoped. I secured the loan, purchased the property, and had a fast closing date only two weeks away. I planned on giving Oliver three weeks’ notice because I felt guilty. I knew anybody they hired to replace me was going to need training. “That sounds great.”

He pointed at my elbow. “How are you doing? Is it all healed?”

A part of me wondered if he was concerned or just tired of pulling his weight. It had been a long time since he was in the office this much seeing patients. “It’s just about as good as new. Therapy has worked its magic.” I moved my elbow back and forth several times without wincing to prove my point.

“That’s great. When is your last therapy session?”

Okay, so it was about work. “Next Thursday. I should get a clean bill of health at the end of the week.” I didn’t tell him I was going to a different kind of therapy. That was none of his business and didn’t affect my job.

“Great.”

I left his office and grabbed my messenger bag before leaving for the evening. I hadn’t seen Macey since I woke up on her couch last week. She threw herself into work and our communication consisted of phone tag and several text messages. She was busy during the days with work, and I was busy after hours signing papers, meeting with contractors, and waiting until the place was mine. I didn’t have the keys yet, but Patty didn’t think there would be a problem. The owners wanted a quick sale and I was itching to get started on my new life.

My phone lit up with a call from Tamsyn. I answered and was surprised to hear Arya’s voice. “Come over for a swim, Auntie Sawyer.”

My stress immediately vanished. “How am I supposed to say no to you?”

“I don’t know. That’s why Mom made me call you.”

“Ask your mom what’s for dinner.”

She yelled at Tamsyn, who yelled back from another room. I winced and held the phone away from my ear. I heard every word Tamsyn said and every word Arya repeated.

“Okay, I’ll be there in thirty minutes.” I wanted to change my clothes.

“Mom says to invite your new girlfriend, too,” Arya said.

I was pleasantly surprised that Tamsyn invited Macey and equally excited to extend the invitation. “Tell her I will. See you later, peanut.”

I hung up and checked the time. Macey was done with rounds, but probably still at the hospital. I shot her a text.

Tamsyn invited us to dinner and a swim but the swim is optional. That’s more Arya. I wasn’t sure if you were busy tonight or not. I hit send before I overthought it.
